Cancer Talk: Voices of Hope and Endurance from "the Group Room," the World's Largest Cancer Support Group
Published in Paperback by Broadway Books (18 May, 1999)
Authors: Selma R. Schimmel, Barry Fox, and O'Leary
Average review score:

Wonderful for recently diagnosed/those who care about them
Recently diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, I felt very isolated as most women's cancer support groups focus on breast cancer. This book let me know that I was not alone- and that what I was feeling was not only normal, but healthy. It reinforced my belief that positive thought and support are crucial elements to being a survivor. Highly recommended!

Outstanding
When I was diagnosed with lung cancer, I read countless books searching for valuable information, insight and support. Cancer Talk was far and away the best book that I read. Cancer Talk addresses the cancer experience comprehensively from the perspectives of patients, family members/loved ones, and health care professionals. The voices that are heard in this book are inspiring and life-affirming. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful book. Reading Cancer Talk will make your cancer experience easier to bear - you will find hope and the wisdom of survivors in its pages.

most informative
This isn't just a book for people who have been touched by cancer, but, for their loved ones as well.

It will get you informed on every aspect of cancer. Help you deal with the emotions of your diagnosis, helps you cope with the physical and sexual issues. Help you to learn your options in your treatment process, and in the legal work place issues and what your insurance will and will not cover; most of all, how important it is to be in a cancer support group. This is a very important book for those who want to be well informed about this illness.

I've yet to deal with this in my family, knock wood, I was sincerely impressed and informed. Very well done.

Murder Can Rain on Your Shower
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Signet (04 March, 2003)
Author: Selma Eichler
Average review score:

A guest keels over after a few bites of her salad
Desiree Shapiro, a Manhattan PI who loves food, throws her niece Ellen a bridal shower with Allison Lynton, mother of the groom, at Silver Oaks Country Club. Unfortunately Bobbie Jean, Allison's sister-in-law, takes a few bites of her green salad and keels over.

Desiree believes this to be a homicide and begins investigating. She discovers many people didn't get along well with Bobbie Jean. Bobbie Jean had stolen many fiances and husbands over the years. The suspect list keeps growing and changing.

Allison's husband Wes, Bobbie Jean's brother, has a tough time accepting her death. This adds to the tension in the family.

A new love interest starts calling Desiree. This makes it quite difficult, at times, for her to concentrate on the investigation.

Unfortunately Chief Porchow has set his sights on one suspect, and Desiree has to speed up her investigation before they arrest an innocent woman. She also finds Chief Porchow is not very receptive to her help and information. But, narrowing down the suspect list is not an easy task.

Desiree is the type of PI I'd want to hire if I ever needed one. She is very down-to-earth and loves food. We get to know her strengths and weaknesses in this series. She is a three-dimensional character. She also has a great relationship with Ellen -- who is a character in her own right.

The society ladies that Desiree investigates are very realistic. It is easily believed that they could be hiding something and adds to the overall mystery.

At the end of this book is a tasty new recipe for Desiree's Wild Mushroom Croustades. Food is a big focus in this series.

This cozy is one of my favorite series. I highly recommend this book. When you read one book, you'll want to read the whole series.

My love affair with Eichler
Ok, so it isn't exactly a *love affair* but I adore Selma Eichler's books. I'm currently reading my way through all her books and with my busy schedule I only have time to read before bed each night. Thank you Ms. Eichler for giving me that *something to look forward to* each day.

Desiree does it again!
Or rather, Selma Eichler does it again. I'm a big fan of this series and Eichler's plus-sized private investigator, the always feisty yet lovable, Desiree Shapiro. Once again, the plot is well-constructed, this time involving a murder at the bridal shower of Desiree's niece, Ellen. The pacing is quick, the suspects numerous, the red herrings well-placed and the outcome satisfying. Another great entry in this series. Highly recomended for any mystery fan.

Authors: Ivan Damjanov and Selma Ozmat
Average review score:

Pathology explained for dummies
I am a biologist, and found this book very intelligible and easy.

Great Overall Text
This text provided the subject of Pathology in a clear and concise way without over simpifying the subject. The color photos provided a more hands-on feel, and stressed the important points. The questions at the end of the chapter were a good review of the key points.

Great Overall Text
This text is a clear, concise guide to Pathology for those in the Health Related Fields. As a Pharmacy student, I felt that it provided me with just the right amount of depth without over-simplifying the subjects. It provided clear color photos to emphasize the important points.

The Rise of Egyptian Communism, 1939-1970 (Contemporary Issues in the Middle East)
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (August, 1988)
Author: Selma Botman
Average review score:

buy the book.
I have learned a great deal on the roots of Egypian politics by reading this book. Currently, the Middle East situation is so that we must all pay heed to the structure of those countries. I apologize for the demanding heading...I did not know what else to write. Botman does, however; this is quality.

Rockin'
This book was rockin...it helped me so much in my comparative politics course, especially when it was time to do my term paper. NOt only was it a good resource though, it really taught me about the middle east background and situation. I think that it's an important book to read whether or not you have to do so for class. Three cheers!

I GOT AN 'A'
I had to read selections from this for my course at school about Egyptian politics. Actually, I only signed up because I heard the teacher liked hockey players a lot. But I read this book, the entire thing, not just the selections, because I needed to do well on the exam to maintain my GPA, since I'm an athlete. I read this and I got and A on the exam and a B+ in the class. THANK YOU SELMA BOTMAN! I didn't fail because I read the book and I learned a lot of things that I probably would have never known if I hadn't taken this course. I won't be a major in Eygptian politics, but I will at least know what I'm talking about when someone brings up something about MIddle Eastern politics. I GOT AN A! that's nuts. If I can get an A, you can too. Read this book, I swear your Profs will love you for it.

The Art of Maurice Sendak
Published in Hardcover by Abradale Press (September, 1998)
Author: Selma G. Lanes
Average review score:

An illustrator, artist, writer, making the history.
For many north american and japanese families, everyone must remember the legendary children book of their young age, "Where the wild things are" by Maurice Sendak. Well, Sendak didn't just draw and write his own children books. He did many other things before actually getting to the success he is at now.
The book goes in detail about Sendak's personal life growing up in Brooklyn, New York, from his very early stage of life as a Polish American child to his approach as an artist at teenage age. The author talks about his influence from his parents and siblings, as well their struggle to survive the recessive economy in America. The author treats Sendak as an artist, who explores mostly around the writings and illustrations of children. The book shows many rare prints and drawings of Sendak. How Sendak plays with art materials and his creativity into both pictorial children books and editorial illustrations. Near the end of the book it also talks about his plans and drawings for theatre art, especially the opera for "Where the Wild Things Are". Something not everyone knew about!
I would say this is a book for any illustration fan or artist to own. But don't get it for your kid, it is no children book, it is an artbook mostly aim for adults and collectors.

The Best picture book ever!!
This book is the best book ever my children love it! The pictures are awesome nothing can compare to Maurice Sendak's pictures.

A reader from Tunisia
I have read this novel in French, and I have found it is one of the best books I have ever read. More, I've also read the next book 'The gardens of Badalpour". I recommend widely these books to lovers of historical novels.

One of the best books I have ever read.
I have read this novel in English and in Spanish, and I have found it is one of the best books I have ever read. Historically, It gives you a realistic glimpse of the fall of the Turkish Empire, the life in Lebanon and the life in India during the last days of the British Dominion. The story of the princess and her daughter is dramatic and sweet at the same time. I recommend widely this book to lovers of historical novels.

The best book I have ever read in my life
I have read the Turkish version of this book. I was sleepless until I finised the book, and after me, 8 of my friends were sleepless when reading the same book. It gives great historical knowledge with a very fluent language so that you can't stop yourself reading it. But unfortunately I couldn't find the next book "The gardens of Badalpuor" either in English or Turkish.

From Selma to Sorrow: The Life and Death of Viola Liuzzo
Published in Paperback by University of Georgia Press (05 August, 2000)
Author: Mary Stanton
Average review score:

Viola Liuzza An Astonishing Person for Her Time and Forever
The only thing I remember in 1965 about my childhood in Montgomery, Alabama was that I was six-years-old and there was the terrible murder of a white woman by the Ku Klux Klan. I didn't know her name. All I knew was she was killed for having a black man ride in her car with her. That is all I have known for years. Thanks to Mary Stanton's excellent biography, I now know her name and her story. One night after reading several chapters I could not get to sleep. My thoughts were of Vi and Highway 80 out of Selma. Remembering can be a painful thing but through the sensitivity of Stanton's writing and her personal admiration for Viola Liuzza, I came to love and admire this courageous woman. Sorry that we never met. I appreciate Stanton sharing her struggle to research the story and write it. That was fascinating and very rewarding to be at Stanton's side page after page hoping her contacts and leads would pan out.

Dramatized civil and women's rights 1960s style
This book took priority over my agenda, a page turner of the first order. Getting the real story of Viola Liuzzo was on the back burner of my own mind so long I didn't remember it was there until Stanton's book caught my attention at the library. The book is in layers, with the story of getting the story as telling of the 1990s as the unfolding of what was actually happening in Selma and America in the 1960s. The role of women and political correctness 1960s style all over the U.S.A. as well as in Selma rings true. The story of the civil rights movement in the context of the South is absolutely girpping.

An excellant read for truth-searchers
Like Mary Stanton, I was also curious about Mrs Luizzo, and she stayed in the back of my mind. I am sorry for the loss her family and many other families suffered simply because they wanted to change something that was completely wrong and unjust. I also feel shame on a government who would go so far to make those who were right and decent appear so degrading and immoral and to even allow murder to protect the "status quo" This book is must reading for anyone who really wants to take the blinders off about what really happened during that horrible time. I have recently been given the opportunity to visit parts of Alabama and while the area I visited is very decent, mentally I can still visualize the Alabama of 1965 and understand why it is necessary to leave the Viola Luizzo marker defaced; as the author has stated the struggle isn't over. Thank you Mary Stanton

The MAGIC YEARS
Published in Paperback by Scribner (December, 1996)
Author: Selma Fraiberg
Average review score:

Interesting, but dense
I found this book to be pretty interesting, but a little difficult to digest. Perhaps because it was written a while ago. It tends to be very dense, but if you can slug your way through it, you will be rewarded. It gave a lot of good insight into behavior of young children, which I haven't found in any other books. I wish I had read it sooner.

A valuable resource for anyone working with children
I have owned several copies of this over the years, and reread it every year or so. It is the best book for understanding development from the young child's perspective. I use examples from this book in my workshops. It is readable, enjoyable, and although it is 40 years old, is one of the most up-to-date and clear books I have read on children's emotional development. She was a woman ahead of her time!

A delightful window into your child's mind
This book gives the reader a wonderful insight into the thought processes of children throughout early childhood. The winsome descriptions and psychological information combines well to give the reader a well-rounded view of early childhood. The clear examples given allow a parent to determine his child's developmental stage.

Engendering Citizenship in Egypt
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 February, 1999)
Author: Selma Botman
Average review score:

Where is the cover art?
You should all go out and buy this book, or sit in your office and buy it online if you want. But where is the cover art? I really liked the picture on the cover, it's black and white and it's like a mass movement. Well, do not judge a book only by its cover (or lack thereof). You should buy this book; despite the amazon oversight of cover art, the text is way better than the image on the front.

pertinant
I learned a lot about the current situation in the mid-east when I read this for class. It is so interesting to see a devout country that doesn't do the whole Jihad thing against America. I would recommend this book RIGHT NOW. you should get it and learn about the REAL situation there. great stuff.

quite useful resource
I personally found this book very useful in understanding the status of women in Egypt, but also the entire Mid-East. I was able to see that female discrimination did not end in Afghanistan with the Taliban. This book shed a light on an under-represented area of social studies (in my opinion). I would recommend it fully.
